First, I’m going to share a few of my own personal experiences of being in the flow state.

I’m C Wilson Meloncelli, but my friends call me Wilson​.  I’m an ex professional MMA fighter, stuntman and performance coach.

I started my flow journey when I was around 5 years old. My uncle was a martial arts master who taught with the emphasis on the inner warrior required as martial artist.  He demanded focus, but yet transmitted it in a playful way.

When he taught me, he would create situations that would put me into a subconscious and highly focused state.

I would be relaxed but fully engaged in the movement he was teaching at the time.

Unbeknown to me at that time, he was creatively producing triggers to hack me into flow.

When my uncle finally moved on. He left me with a strong taste for the flow state.

But getting into flow back then wasn’t as easy for me as it is now. Over my early years, this contact with the flow flickered on and off.

Once, when skateboarding, I attempted my first drop-in on a quarter pipe (aka a skateboard ramp).

Now, just to be clear I only knew a few basic tricks. For instance, I could do a pretty good ollie.

That’s about it… but at that age I thought I was awesome!

So I dropped in and then everything went in sssssslllllllooooowwwww motion…

I saw my board fly away in front of me, as my body glided into a horizontal potion in mid-air!

Now, you would probably think “Panic station!!”

BUT I DIDN’T!

I was completely dissolved in the action, relaxed, calm and attentive.

I felt that I had all the time I needed to land safely. And I did!

Ok, yes its was without the skateboard, as that headed straight for the shins of my friend! ;))

But I tasted that ‘state of being’ again!!

At the time, I was unaware that I was experiencing a transient hypofrontality

This is where your prefrontal cortex of your brain temporarily lessens. When this happens areas of the brain that distinguish the difference between self and other also lessen…Giving you a feeling of being at one with all.

Plus the area of the brain that perceives time is also shut down!

This is why I experienced a distortion in time when skateboarding.

Hence my sense of action merging with awareness…

The feeling of being at “one” with the action.

Very cool right!

Can you now see my hunger to learn more?

However, this state of flow once again become elusive to me. I knew it was there I just couldn’t hack into it!

As I grew up, I picked up social habits and programming that only later I realized were taking me further away from the truth.

Following these beliefs created frustration, anxiety and tension as I sensed it was taking me further away from flow.

It was as if a dark grey cloud was blocking me from experiencing flow on command.

Then in the late 90s, I moved to England to train with a martial arts teacher who inspired me and sensed my potential.

He trained me very hard, creating some brutal sessions.

He would put me in the ring with former World Kickboxing Champions, guys weighing in from 244lb – 280lb!

I was only 168.

It was a David and Goliath situation – high risk and danger was at every training session.

However, one day my teacher lined up 4 guys that each had 3mins in the ring with me. My job was to not get hit, but also to not hit them!

“What?!” I said.

He reply calmly “You heard me.”

As the 1st bell rang, it happened again. I was in what jazz players call “the pocket” sprinters call the “zone” And what I call “the flow state”.

15 rounds later… Yes, 15 rounds later, 4 guys walked away physically drained and frustrated!

Back then, I was unaware of the breakthroughs achieved in neurobiology research.

I was in what some researchers are calling

“THE DEEP NOW”. I had hit “the sweet spot” again, where my brain waves were in the bridge between alpha, theta waves, at 7-8 cycles per second.

All my movements were effortless…

To fully understand the depth of this story, I need to give you short “quick guide” tutorial on the neuroscience of the flow.

While in flow, our performance enhancing / superhuman state, we release a powerful combination of neurotransmitters and hormones.

6 in particular.

  • NOREPINEPHRINE: Speeds up heart rate, improves tension, triggers the release of glucose giving your more energy. When your neural efficiency is up, arousal and control of emotion too.
  • DOPAMINE: Gives you the feeling of engagement in a task, excitement, adventure… and rewards you for it. It dramatically increases your attention, improves pattern recognition and muscle firing times.
  • ENDORPHINS: These pain relieving and ‘euphoria-generating’ neurotransmitters are pretty strong to say the least. You have 20 different types of endorphins, one of which is called the beta-endorphins. These are reported as being 100 times more potent than medical morphine.
  • ANANDAMIDE: The word is taken from the Sanskrit word ananda, meaning bliss , joy or delight. Anandamide lift moods, dilates blood vessels, bronchial tubes (aiding in breathing), inhibits out ability to feel fear and improves your lateral thinking.
  • OXYTOCIN: The ‘love hormone’, whose name is derived from the Greek word ‘quick birth’. Associated with maternal behaviours and generated between sexual partners. However, recent findings point to a broader scope in humans with oxytocin associated with social bonding, trust and emotional behaviours.
  • SEROTONIN: The vast majority of the body’s serotonin is found in the gastrointestinal tract. Serotonin affects your mood, social behaviour, appetite, digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire.

This are POTENT REWARD CHEMICALS…  so all who experience flow, are hungry for more! You’ve heard the expressions “Surf bums” and “Adrenalin junkies” right?

Well, to further understand the strength of these potent reward chemicals. Let’s talk about DRUGS. When taking cocaine: dopamine fluids the brain and blocks out anything else, so the substance stays in the brain longer.

While taking Ritalin you have a dramatic increase in concentrations of dopamine and norepinephrine.

MDMA, also known as ecstasy, increases the activity of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.

Endorphin: they are essentially opiates / opium. We have 20 different endorphin in the body. The most common Endorphin is 100 times more potent than medical morphine.

ONLY IN FLOW do you release all 6 of these potent reward chemicals at once.

Now after the dramatic high of these performance enhancing “feel-good” neurotransmitters and hormones… then comes an equally dramatic low.

What goes up must come down. Kind of like a drug addict that couldn’t find his next hit. Frustration, anxiety and tension are common symptoms of the low after the potent rewarded chemicals release in the flow state.

Well, this is what I was in… searching and searching, but unknowing that I was creating a thicker cloud of frustration and anxiety, as if I was in a loop of struggle.

I was struggling to find flow… getting more and more anxious.

I was picking up more bullshit from others who told me they knew the way.

It was like the blind leading the blind!

“No man, don’t relax, fight through the pain and find flow”

Or you get those people that say one thing, but do the complete opposite themselves!!​

Confusion, frustration and anger were my state as I hunted for the elusive flow state.

Then I became like everyone else. I fell asleep and started to work around like a zombie. I was 24, my life at a standstill and I was around a lot of the wrong crowd of people.

There was a lot of drugs and partying – all those things, but what really made me hit  rock bottom was my dad dying.

On top of this, I was in the loop of struggle flooding my system with excess cortisol, which was altering my immune system, suppressing my digestive system…

This Number 1 stress hormone was also in communication with the region of my brain that controls mood, motivation and FEAR.

Not a good combination when you are training to be a STUNTMAN and competing in mixed martial arts!!

So as you can imagine, this sent me in a real dark place where I was really close to not coming out the other end!

However, around that time I came across this old Italian wise man. Thankfully he took me under his wing and began to guide me back on track.

It was a hard road, but during this time, his training triggered a memory of some ancient teachings my uncle had also shared with me.

And with my teacher’s influence, I figured out this system to hack into flow.

This is a system that allows people just like us, real everyday men and women

To Have:

Extreme and total confidence, and the ability to overcome any obstacle that, until NOW, may have been standing in your way…

This is the system I used to go from rock bottom to winning the British MMA Championship and becoming a successful stunt performer.

Becoming the man I am today.

And it’s the exact same system I’ll be sharing with you today, so you can finally experience results like this for yourself!

I need to let you in on what your real problem is today.

This is the hidden foe – the real villain behind why you are coming up short… and why living life sometimes like a ‘zombie’ is not your fault!

The real problem is the fact that you’ve been programmed to fail for years and these lies are keeping you from achieving flow on command…

You may have heard, or perhaps even believed at one point, that flow is an elusive state only achieved in LIFE OR DEATH situations.

But that’s that’s just nowhere near the truth…

If you are one of the millions that have fallen victim to this false belief… then you need to decide NOW if you want to continue with this limiting belief patterns or move forwards into flow.

Don’t be a victim of limiting beliefs…

instead move forward on a path of flow.

If you don’t, you may never attain your dreams.

You may end up suffering with pessimism and extreme anxiety.

And you may even develop depression and self-hatred, thinking you’re a failure in life…

And this is not what I want for you or anyone.

Today, I’m going to share exactly how I have successfully and consistently hacked my professional clients into the flow state.

NUMBER 1 ​Enter the Mind Towards Flow

For simplicity of this explanation, let’s split the mind into two parts: your conscious and subconscious.

Your conscious mind processes information very slowly and requires a large amount of energy to do so. It is like delivering a letter through the mail. On the flip side, your subconscious mind is like delivering the same message through email: very rapid and needing very little energy to do so.

The real interesting part here is that we require less energy to function faster and be more effective.

Dr Andrew Newberg from the University of Pennsylvania undertook pioneering research into spiritual experiences during meditation with Tibetan buddhists and Franciscan nuns.

What he reports is that certain areas of the brain actually lessen in activity, whereas other areas fire off like an orchestra  playing a loud chord, where every instrument is playing a part.

Dr Arne Dietrich of the American University of Beirut further worked on this phenomenon and coined the technical term a “transient hypofrontality”.

This is where areas of the brain lessen in activity. These areas of your brain are called lobes. You have a frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobe, each with a specific function. Dr Newberg’s research pinpoints that during this peak state, your temporal parietal junction lessons in activity.

You might be saying, “So what, Wilson?” Well, when I tell you that this location is where we distinguish between self and other. Where your illusion of separation is gone, unlocking the sense of being at one with everything…

Newberg reported that this temporal parietal junction is lessened in both the monks and nuns during their meditations.

The participants reported this state as the feeling of “being at one” or a “state of cosmic unity”. Extreme sports athletes report the same thing. But they call it “being at one with the wave” “being at one with the mountain” or “being in the flow”.

Research has shown that only 4 days of meditation can produce a 200% boost in creativity.

Well, I’ve created a revolutionary meditation technique so you too can experience this sense of “being at one” with whatever you’re doing on a daily basis. Can you imagine feeling like this every day? Where you are in flow whenever you want?

And you’d be correct – well at least, it SHOULD cost a pretty penny.

But I’ll get to the price in just a few moments…

First, I want to share something that I find VERY EXCITING with you.

Professor Mihaly Csikzentmihalyi, the father of flow research found, common elements people report during a flow state. The disappearing of your inner critic is one of them…

The inner critic that wreaks havoc! The voice that fuels the fire of fear and doubt… that shuts you up.

Well, in flow, your inner critic disappears. You become “one” with the task at hand.

Remember your body and mind are your instrument  for expressing your skill, sport or profession, or Whatever it may be… So you must effectively work both aspects to  keep your instrument in perfect tune.

Number 2: Physically Trigger the Flow State

Sitting quietly, and meditating and focusing your mind into flow is not as easy as it sounds for some. The reason for this comes down to your autonomic nervous system’s dominance.

Let me explain briefly.

We all have a sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, which are like on and off switches for your nervous system.

You and I each have a dominance, so perhaps you’re naturally more parasympathetic, so meditations are easier for you to flow into. Or maybe you’re like me and are more sympathetic. This means that physically getting triggered into the flow state is much faster and easier for you.

As you now know, there is a huge amount, and a growing database, of research on the flow state. Some of the coolest work in this regard has been pulled together by the Flow Genome Project. They have identified triggers to get you into flow.  I’m going to explain just six of these powerful triggers that will hack you physically into the flow state where action merges with awareness.​

  • Intensely Focused Attention: Movements that allow you to strongly focus your attention on the tasks.
  • Clear Goals: ​You know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.
  • Immediate Feedback: Tells you how to do it better in real time.​
  • Challenge and Skill Ratio: ​You need a progressive balance between tension and relaxation.
  • High Consequences: This doesn’t always means physical danger, this can also be emotional, mental and social risk. You must be willing to take risks. It’s that sense of adventure and potential for failure that will drive you.​
  • Deep Embodiment: This means total physical awareness. Not only our 5 senses but also our proprioception (our sense of our position in space), kinaesthesia (Our sense of movement in space) and vestibular awareness (our sense of balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordination movement with balance).​

SO… what I have done is create physical flow trigger workouts, which will drive your whole being into the flow state. So that in time, every cell in your body will pulse at the frequency of flow.

This is a physically demanding bodyweight training program, designed to flow through the six triggers, firing your system into flow without the need for you to try! In fact, all you need to do is learn the flow workouts and allow yourself to dissolve into the movements.

So what actually happens during the flow state?

The sequence of events that happen during the flow state begins with the release of norepinephrine and dopamine.

These raise your heart rate, tighten focus and improve pattern recognition.

Your brain waves move from beta towards alpha, giving you the ability to link ideas without internal obstructions and filters blocking your flow.

Your prefrontal cortex at this point begins to shut down, giving you the sense of time distorting, effortlessness and of the self dissolving into the task.

You are now in a transient hypofrontality, where your inner critic has also shut up, opening you to your full potential.

Your brain then releases endorphins and anandamide, giving you the ability to dissolve away distress and pain.

Simultaneously, anandamide boosts your lateral thinking, allowing you to solve problems in an indirect and creative way.

As you flow deeper in, theta brain waves enhance relaxation and your intuition.

Concluding the experience, you have oxytocin and serotonin giving you the “afterglow” feeling of trust, peace, sociability and well-being as you begin to digest the experience you have just been experienced.

According to Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihali there are 8 key characteristics expressed in a flow state.

  • CLEAR GOALS: There is a great inner clarity and you know what needs to be done.
  • STRONG CONCENTRATION & FOCUSED ATTENTION: You are completely involved in what you’re doing.
  • LOSS OF SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS: A feeling of going beyond your comfort zone. You lose your inner critic, and feel fearlessness, in a place where distractions and anxieties don’t surface.
  • DISTORTED SENSE OF TIME: You lose track of time and you’re completely focused on the present moment.
  • THE BALANCE BETWEEN SKILL AND CHALLENGE: You know that the activity is feasible, and you have the skills to complete the task successfully and skilfully.
  • PERSONAL CONTROL OVER THE SITUATION: There’s an essential motivation and whatever produces flow becomes its own reward.
  • ABSORPTION: You lose your sense of self and all of your worries and concerns drift away.
